Alphorns from the Bavarian Alps

This gorgeous card picturing alphorn players with traditional Bavarian costumes comes from Sebastian. 😀

The alphorn is mainly known for its use in Switzerland. However, similar wooden horns were used for communication in most mountainous regions of Europe, from the French Alps to the Carpathians. Although it is uncertain when alphorns were first used, there is archaeological evidence to show that the oldest surviving alphorns date back to 1400 A.D. Other sources suggest that the Celtic tribes that first settled the northern Alps, some 2000 years ago, first used these instruments. While in the past, the Swiss shepherds used the alphorn as a way of communication; today the alphorn is mostly played by musicians.
